Mondiaal FNV shares research on the role of Works Committees in promoting Freedom of Association

On this Human Rights Day (10 December), Mondiaal FNV shines a spotlight on workers' rights with new research developed under STITCH. This study dives into the role of Works Committees (WCs) in promoting Freedom of Association. WCs are a legally mandated structure aimed at addressing workplace concerns in Indian factories employing over 100 workers.

The conclusion? While WCs are effective in addressing and resolving workers’ day-to-day challenges, they fall short of fostering trade union formation or enabling workers to fully exercise their right to Freedom of Association—an internationally recognised cornerstone of workplace democracy.

The paper provides actionable recommendations for employers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to enhance the impact of WCs. Plus, it explores ways to empower workers to unionise and amplify their collective voice.
